Windows Hosts File Editor

lately at work i’ve been doing a lot of editing on my Windows HOSTS file. i decided i needed a shortcut right to my hosts file on the various machines i use. i realized with just a little extra effort i could create a small hosts file editor with desktop shortcut and/or quick launch access for anyone else who might need the same thing.

btw, if you don’t know what a hosts file is or how to use it then the freeware is of no use to you.

so if you check out my freeware page you will notice a download link for Win Hosts File Editor.

hope it helps… and enjoy!

Pandoras Music Box

thanks to casey for pointing out this neat site that creates an online radio of songs based on the DNA of music you already like. it’s not perfect but there is some huge potential. i’m always discovering artists and songs that i didn’t know about by chance… just imagine if u could find music based on the qualities that you enjoy. i think it’s a very interesting idea.

Free Antivirus Software

Do you have antivirus software?

I’ve gone without using antivirus software for several years now. This is mainly due to my extensive use of zone alarm’s free firewall. I’ve always said that with a good firewall and proper ActiveX settings inside your browser and email client that most viruses are pretty easily avoided. For the past couple of weeks however, I’ve been having to disable my firewall under certain circumstances while working. Since I’ve used a firewall for so long I was really worried that just a little bit of time without my firewall being enabled would open up some pretty big holes and allow the dreaded viruses to make their way on the my computer. So, for the first time I decided to look into antivirus software and what was available on the market. Of course, if you know me very well the first thing I’m doing is looking for some kind of freeware. And of course, if you know much about the antivirus software market and how much money is made selling such software you probably thought as I did that I would have no luck finding freeware antivirus software. If that’s what you thought, you were wrong but don’t worry because so was I! Thankfully, there is indeed a free of charge antivirus software available for home personal use. I’m not sure how good this antivirus software stands up to the big names such as Norton and McAfee , but after quick installation and a scan of my computer the software did indeed discover that a couple of viruses had made their way on my hard drive . The free antivirus software cleaned them up and I’m glad I didn’t have to pay for it!

Google Maps for IE and Windows Downloaded 884 and counting

Well it’s officially been 1 month that my Google Maps freeware download has been on Download.com and thus far it’s shown an impressive 669 downloads. I’ve also had 171 downloads directly from my site. That’s a total of 884 downloads in the first month… not too shabby.

the numbers should be more impressive once I submit the software to all the other 100+ freeware sites. i just haven’t had time this past month. (it only takes about an hour or so… but man that’s valuable time these days).

so, again thanks to james cross for the icons and i hope everyone who’s enjoying Google Maps (http://maps.google.com) is enjoying my Google Maps for Internet Explorer and Windows Freeware (https://www.bustercollings.com/freeware/google-maps/)

Southwest Airlines DING!

this is a cool little app i have it running on my pc and check it out from time to time looking for an airline fare thats really great. i haven’t bought anything from it yet but i’m sure some day it’s gonna show me something hard to turn down! i bet its great if u know u have a trip coming up and u can wait a while for being forced to take whatever ticket prices are out there at the moment.

Southwest Airlines DING!

btw, Southwest Airlines is, imo, one of the greatest businesses of this age. they have a lot going for them (never a passenger fatality [actually a rare thing with airlines], they didn’t take the subsidies offered to airlines after September 11th… because they were still profitable and didn’t want to burden the taxpayers [you/me] [the other airlines had no choice apparently]). if u look at their stock performance on the short end you’ll probably think… ah… whatever… but how bout the long term numbers!
